River Tyne Monthly Fish Update – July 2013
Fish Counts
The upstream count for July was 6,305 and is the 3rd highest in our records. The count is 746 higher than the five-year average and 1,908 higher than long term average. The count for year to the end of July is 9,643 and is the 5th highest in our records. This count is 196 higher than the five year average and 2,565 higher than the long term average. As of 9am on 1st August, the upstream count for the month was 138 which brings the total for the year to date to 9,781.

The chart below shows the daily upstream counts recorded throughout July with corresponding indices of flow and water temperature. During July, we see two distinct count ‘events’; 12th - 14th and 25th - 31st. During the first event, the increase in the number of upstream counts recorded occurs approximately one day into the release of water from Kielder; approximately 650 upstream counts were recorded during the release. The second event coincides with a release from Kielder with some natural input closely followed by a spate originating from the South Tyne. During the release approximately 1,700 upstream counts were counts record and approximately 2300 were recorded when the flows were dropping back after the spate on the 28th.
For much of the month the majority of upstream were recorded during the hours of darkness. Only when there was an increase in flow, did the numbers of upstream counts recorded during the day exceed those recorded during the night. This is most obvious during the release and natural flow event and spate towards the end of the month. The day following the spate on the 28th showed a noticeable reduction in the numbers of upstream counts recorded during the night and a massive increase in those recorded during the day but as the flow decreases, the numbers recorded during the day drops while the numbers recorded at night increase.

Angler Scale Sampling Programme
So far 24 scale samples have been received for July bring the total for the season to 81. Of the number received for July, 19 are from salmon and 5 are from sea trout. Of the salmon samples received in June, 11 were from the main Tyne, 6 from the North Tyne and 2 from the South Tyne. All of the sea trout samples came from fish caught on the North Tyne. Eleven of the salmon samples that have been read came from early running multi-sea winter salmon or ‘spring fish’, all which had spent two winters at sea. Of the remainder of the samples read, three were from later running fish, again all had spent two winter at sea and two were from one sea winter fish or grilse. Of the sea trout samples four came from were one sea winter maiden fish and one from a fish making its second return to the river.
