Upstream counts July 2012
The upstream count for July was 4,111, bringing the total for the year to 7,842. The count for July is the ninth highest in our records but was lower than both the five-year (5,559) and long-term (4,397) averages. The total for the year to the end of July was the eighth highest in our records and is lower than the five-year average (9,447) but higher than the long-term average (7,078). The highest July count (9,240) and the highest for the period January – July (13,464) were both recorded in 2010. The upstream count for August up to approximately 10am on the 9th is 1,183.
The three highest daily counts occurred on the 20th, 23rd, 24th when 254, 265 and 446 were recorded respectively. The conditions when these higher counts were recorded appear to be quite different with the first occurring when levels were dropping after a spate, the second during a period of increasing water temperatures and the third during a modest rise in river levels. Usually during July, we see increases in counts on the back of rises in flow and the corresponding drops water temperature, however, this July, as in the previous two months we are seeing increasing counts when water temperatures are rising and dropping when they fall.
The chart below shows at what time of day counts were recorded through July. Usually the majority of counts are recorded from around 10pm through to 7am, however, on this occasion the majority were recorded between 4am and 5pm. We see do similar responses but these are usually observed during the spring and autumn months when water temperatures are generally much cooler and levels frequently higher than those observed during the summer months.

Angler Scale Sampling Programme 2012
During July, we received 61 scale samples from salmon 37 from sea trout and 1 from a mystery; the scale packet was delivered to us on the 17th July with no details of fish or a name and address on the scale packet. If you have sent in a sample around this time and have not received your results please get in touch. Roughly, half the samples have been read and hopefully all by the end of the next week. Of the salmon samples that have been read, 8 have come from early running multi sea winter (MSW) salmon, 2 from one sea winter (1SW) fish or ‘grilse’, 23 from later running MSW fish and 2 from fish returning to river for a second time.
Of the sea trout samples that have been read, 13 have come from 1SW maidens, 9 from previous spawning fish. Four of the previous spawning fish were on their second return to the river four were on the third and the remaining sample came from the fish retuning for the fourth time. Interestingly that fish has yet to spend one winter at sea. When it originally left the river as smolt, it spent only a few months out at sea before returning to spawn.
So far, we have received 226 scale samples, 168 from salmon, 57 from sea trout and one unknown sample. The samples we have received this season have come from 27 different fishing beats and from 92 different anglers.
If you are sending in some scales, please place them in a paper envelop and include the place and date of capture. If you need some scale packets, we can send some out to you. We would also be grateful if you could give an estimate of weight and or length. If you wish to receive details of the scale reading, remember to add your name and address.
