Upstream counts May 2012
The upstream count for May this was 1029, bringing the total for the year to 1,450. May’s count is the second highest in our records and is higher than both the five year (757) and the long term (585) averages. The total for the year to the end of May is the third highest on record and is higher than both the five year (1,021) and the long term (781) averages. The highest total for April occurred in 2011, when 1,346 upstream counts were recorded whilst the highest count for the first five months was 1,866 which again was recorded during 2011. The upstream count up to approximately 10am on the 6th June was 291.
The highest daily counts occurred on the 27th and 29th of the month, when 110 and 103 counts were recorded respectively. These counts were recorded during a period of increased count activity which coincided with an overall increase in the river temperatures whch occures around the 21st. Unusually for May, the only noticeable change in counts in response to changes in flow, when there is a slight improvements in the daily counts recorded once river levels returned to normal after the spate on the 11th.

Angler Scale Sampling Programme 2012
During May we have received 7 scales sample from salmon and 1 from a sea trout. Of the salmon scale samples, only three have prepared and read two came from 3 sea winter spring fish and one from a 2 sea winter spring fish. The sea trout scale samples came from a maiden fish (returning to spawn for the first time). It had left the river as a smolt during the spring of 2011. Unusually when this sea trout left as a smolt it was approximately one year old. S1 sea trout account for less 1% of the all the sea trout scale samples we have received through the Angler Scale Sampling Programme.
So far this year we have received 60 scale samples, 58 of which have come from salmon and two from sea trout. Just under 65% of salmon samples have come from spring fish. Unfortunately it has not been possible to determine the age from two of the samples. Of the sea trout samples one has come from a 2012 maiden fish and one from a 2011 repeat spawning fish.
Please remember that if you are sending some scales, please place them in a paper envelope. Please remember to send in place and date of capture, if you need some scale packets we can send some out to you. We would also be grateful if you could give an estimate of weight and or length. If you wish to receive details of the scale reading please remember to add your name and address.
