Default Tyne Angler Scale Sampling Programme. June 2012

Upstream counts June 2012

The upstream count for June this was 2,281, bringing the total for the year to 3,731. June’s count is the fifth highest on record and was higher than the long term average (1899) but markedly lower than the five-year average (2867). The total for the year to the end of June is the six highest and is considerably higher than the long-term average (2,681) but slightly lower than the five-year average (3,888). The highest June total occurred in 2008, when 4,047 upstream counts were recorded while the highest count for the first half of the year was 5,233, which was recorded during 2004. The upstream count to approximately 10am on the 3rd July was 120.

The highest daily counts occurred on the 26th and 30th of the month when 174 and 167 were recorded respectively. Larger daily totals mainly occurred after river levels had dropped back following the large rises in river level, however, the levels at which the river has dropped back to, have increased throughout the month due to the frequency of these large rises. Water temperatures also show short term drops presumably because of these spates, recovering once levels drop back. Furthermore, water temperatures during the month were below average, possibly due to the frequency of the spate with the maximum daily average being was just over 14C and the monthly average slightly over 12.5C: the average monthly temperature for June is usually between 15 and 16C.

Further details of the daily upstream counts for 2012 and historic monthly counts can be found by following the link below:

If you are not already aware, we have a system on the internet that will allow you to check river levels before you head out. Please follow the link below:

Angler Scale Sampling Programme 2012

During June, we received 33 scales sample from salmon and 17 from sea trout. Of the salmon scale samples, 15 came from early running (spring) multi sea winter (MSW) fish and 13 from late running (summer/autumn) MSW fish, one of which was returning to spawn for a second time. Of the remainder, one was from a 2011 returning fish (identified by the angler as such), three have yet to be read and one from a ‘grilse’ or a one sea winter (1SW) fish. The 1SW salmon, which weighed 7lbs, was caught on the North Tyne. Although, we have received samples from grilse during previous Junes, they have mainly come from fish caught on the Main Tyne and weigh 4 or 5lbs.

Of the sea trout samples, eight have come from 1SW maidens, three from 2SW maidens and four from previous spawning fish (2 sea trout samples have yet to be read). Three of the previous spawning fish were making their second return to the river while the remaining sample was from a fish making it fourth return.

So far, we have received 112 scale samples, 93 from salmon and 19 from sea trout. The samples we have received this season have come from 25 different fishing beats and from 51 different anglers.

If you are sending in some scales, please place them in a paper envelop and include the place and date of capture. If you need some scale packets, we can send some out to you. We would also be grateful if you could give an estimate of weight and or length. If you wish to receive details of the scale reading, remember to add your name and address.

If you would like further details of the Angler Scale Sampling Programme or the Tyne Angler Logbook scheme please call the environmental monitoring team on 0191 203 4140 or drop me an email morton.heddell-cowie@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Many thanks for your support

Morton
