Default River Tyne Monthly Fish Update – June 2013

Fish Counts

The upstream count for June was 2,352 and like last month is the 5th highest in our records. The count is located about halfway between the five-year and long term averages. The highest May upstream count was recorded in 2011. The count for year to the end of June is 3,338 and is the 7th highest in our records. As with the upstream count for June, the figure is located approximately halfway between the five year and long term averages. As of 10am on 4th July, the upstream count for the month was 317 which brings the total for the year to date to 3,655.

During the earlier months of the year water temperature appeared to have a large influence on the number of upstream counts recorded, however it appears that during June, flow has a much greater influence on the numbers of counts recorded. The higher counts were recorded during periods of increased flows, most notably between the 24th -25th, when more than 1,000 upstream were recorded over the two day period; the upstream count for the 24th was 755 and is the second highest single day count for June in our records.

Throughout the month, the number of counts recorded during the daytime were quite similar to number recorded during the night with the exception of the 24th and 25th, when the vast majority were recorded during the daytime. Furthermore, the variation between counts recorded each daytime was greater than those recorded each night.

Angler Scale Sampling Programme

So far 17 scale samples have been received for June bring the total for the season to 49. Of the number received for June, 15 are from salmon and 2 are from sea trout. Of the salmon samples received in June, 13 were from the main Tyne, 2 from the North Tyne and 2 from the South Tyne. The sea trout were both caught on the main River Tyne. The majority of the salmon samples came from early running multi-sea winter salmon or ‘spring fish’, one of which had spent three winters at sea; this fish weighed 20lbs and was 37 inches long. Of the remainder, three were from later running fish and one was a fish was returning to the river for a second time. The two sea trout samples were from fish that had spent one winter at sea and were making their first spawning run.

Please remember this update depends on the success of the Angler Scale Sampling Programme.

If you would like further details of the Angler Scale Sampling Programme or the Tyne Angler Logbook Scheme or know of someone who would like to join or you catch a salmon or sea trout with a green or blue tag please call the environmental monitoring team on 0191 203 4140 or email me, morton.heddell-cowie @ environment-agency.gov.uk.

Many thanks for your support
