A brave crowd gathered at the Ulster Arms Hotel in Halkirk to usher in the 2010 salmon season. At -13C before breakfast and a largely iced over river prospects were not good but spirits were high. The assembled company of anglers was piped across Halkirk bridge and on to the Comlifoot Pool where Davie Dar Sutherland (ex River Superintendent was invited to throw the first fly of the season. Because of river conditions, there was little fishing done on the Day but despite the ice one or two kelts were taken and the river blessed in fine style.
The river has fallen away quite nicely and the severe cold weather has also gone away. Although we do not have a fresh fish to report we can tell you of the massive amount of kelts being seen and caught. If conditions stay as they are, I do not think that it will be too long before the first fish is landed.

River height has been quite good in the course of the week but it has been very cold. Wick angler Alistair Hughes has been getting his hand back in landing an awful lot of Kelts as has Mike Hendstridge. Mike had hold of a sea-trout which he estimated to be 3--4 lbs which fell off at the net but shortly thereafter had hold of a fish which took him tearing down the pool and back up again-----and then fell off. Could it have been "Him"?

It has been a great week with four fish being caught. Don MacKay enhanced his reputation by taking the firsat fish from the Hoy Pool on Wednesday.
We have been continuing with river bank repairs and the Cottage at Loch More is in the process of being repainted. The fireplace in the room on the North side is also being repaired.

Despite the cold, easterly wind we did manage to add another fish to the records. This was an eight pounder caught on beat three by Jim Cameron.
Work is continuing on the Cottage at Loch More and we hope to have it finished by the end of next week.

There was a big repair carried out to the road on lower beat ten between the ruin of Dalemore house and the bridge. We are about to re-construct the "turning area" at Loch More Cottage which was savaged by the recent weather. The Cottage itself only has the floors to be painted before it is finished.
We have not managed another fish this week but I am confident of adding to the total next week

The snow returned with a vengeance in mid week which curtailed many of our planned jobs. We hope to comlete most of our work load over the next week or so which, we hope, will allow us a bit of time to have a cast ourselves.

We have had a thaw in the past twenty four hours which has filled Loch More to overflowing. There has been a touch of colour going through but I fully expect us to be in good order by Monday/Tuesday.
We will be adding the finishing touches to Loch More Cottage in the course of next week

We have enjoyed a very good week fishing wise. We have managed to take fish every day with Tuesday being exceptional. Friday and saturday saw a very strong Westerly gale which spewed tens of thousands of gallons of water over the top of the Dam.
