Tay Rivers Trust PROJECT Development Officer – Job description

Are you passionate about conserving our countryside? Keen not just to plan environmental projects, but to ensure they are delivered ‘on the ground’? Do you have experience of initiating and managing conservation projects, including identifying and applying for funding?

If so then this could be a job for you.

Project Development Officer – Job description

The Organisation

The Tay Rivers Trust is a charitable company limited by guarantee whose charitable objectives are to restore and maintain aquatic biodiversity by means of practical, responsible and sustainable approaches to land, water and fishery management based on sound science for the benefit of the community as a whole.

The Trust also seeks to protect, conserve, improve and enhance all fish species and their ecological cycles, to advance education, training and study and to provide a communications resource for all interested parties.

The Trust has a remit to perform research into all species of fish in the River Tay catchment area, their environment and anything which might impact upon them; to manage or advise on the management of fish stocks. It also has a remit to disseminate the findings of research and educate the public about all the species of fish and their environment in the River Tay and its tributaries.

In those areas where their objectives are aligned the Tay Rivers Trust works in collaboration with the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board.

The Job and what’s involved.

Tay Rivers Trust seeks to appoint a Project Development Officer who will report to the Trust Director.

In the first instance this will be a two year part-time contract. The appointment will be for 22.5 hours per week, to be worked flexibly. Periods of work during evenings and weekends will be required when necessary. The post will attract a salary of £19,200-£24,000 per annum (pro rata to an equivalent of £32,000-£40,000 per annum full time, 37.5 hours per week) depending on the skills and experience of the appointee. Increased hours and/or an extension of contract may become available subject to review of project requirements and continued funding.

Tay Rivers Trust welcomes applications from those who wish to discuss flexible working patterns, such as a condensed week, hours per fortnight, etc.

The successful candidate will be home-based. Office and meeting facilities are available at Cromwell Park, Almondbank near Perth.

The development role will involve working with TRT directors, and liaising with TDSFB Fisheries Director.

Your key areas of work will be:

Upper Shee project

This project seeks to protect the upper Shee, a vital salmon spawning area, from future temperature rise by sourcing funding for, and developing, a scheme of planting shading riparian trees. It is anticipated that this work will be rolled out to other suitable areas within the catchment.

Lowland river habitat restoration project

Complementing the Upper Shee project, this project seeks to improve the riparian habitats along lowland rivers such as the Earn and Isla, by sourcing funding for and implementing work to restore riparian vegetation, for example by fencing out livestock.

River Lyon Chemistry project

This project seeks, in the first instance, to source funding to allow TRT to purchase water chemistry monitoring equipment to deploy in the River Lyon and tributaries to determine the extent to which the storage and release of flow from hydro reservoirs has altered the chemistry of the river from natural state.

You will also be expected to work with TRT Directors and TDSFB Fisheries Director to identify areas for roll-out of these projects, and other suitable environmental projects for TRT to prioritise.

Further information about all these projects, and about the other work of Tay Rivers Trust and the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board can be found here.
