Summary
A unique opportunity to fish the middle/upper part of the famous Gaula River at a reasonable price. Suitable for 2-3 anglers enjoying travelling together. One kilometre single bank fishing on the Gaula and two kilometres single bank fishing on the Bua (major Gaula tributary).
Season: 1 June - 31 August (best period: July and August).
The fishing
The Kjelden beat is on the south-west side of Gaula and on the north-eastern side of the Bua. The total length is around 3 kilometres and over the years a good number of large salmon has been caught, both on the Gaula as well as the Bua stretches.
In practical terms, the whole Kjelden stretch on the Gaula can be seen as one long, continuing pool - the whole stretch easy fishable, whilst the Bua stretch is divided into a number of 15 - 20 metres long pools.
Due to the width of the Gaula stretch, there is no interference from the opposite side and also because no one is hardly seen on that bank. The major part of the Bua stretch has very difficult access on the opposite side and anglers are rarely seen on that side.
Neither the Gaula nor the Bua stretch need any wading and particularly the pools on the Bua can be fished by a position at the head of the pools. If wading, as in most Norwegian rivers, the main rule is only knee-deep wading.
The Kjelden stretches fishes the whole season, with 12 - 15 kilos fish caught often on the first days, but the first part of the season can be interfered by the water level at the Gaulfoss rapids further down river. Normally, the best part is between the end of June till the end of August when both medium size salmon and grilse start to come through. August can also see the challenge of some big cock salmon coming through for the spawning season.
The accommodation
The Kjelden Lodge situated just a few metres from the river, is a well built, traditional Norwegian ‘stabbur’ type of lodge on two levels. It sleeps up to 4 people in twin rooms/lounge bed, sharing two bathrooms/toilets. There are a small kitchenette and a lounge on each floor and can provide lodging for two separate groups/individuals if necessary.
The lodge has a fish handling area, fridges and freezers for those who wish to keep their catch, an area for cleaning and drying equipment and waders.
The food arrangements are based on self-catering with a generous welcome pack to last a couple of days. There are a small supermarket only 5 minutes drive away and larger shops and wine-shop at the Støren village, 15 minutes drive away. As is usual in Norway, the welcome pack is based on traditional, wholesome food.
The farmer and his wife provide sufficient bedding and towels.
Getting There
Kjeldeen Lodge is located near thee Rognes hamlet, east of Storen village in the district of Midtre Gauldal. It is in easy reach of Trondheim Airport by train service or car. There are daily direct flights from different UK and/or EU airports or via Oslo Airport and the most convenient flights can be booked on,Welcome to Norwegian - All Countries ,www.flysas.com or KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Comprehensive Travel Planning Site. Due to the 90 minutes drive from Trondheim Airport car hire is recommended.
