Ljøkjel Beat, River Orkla

The Salmon Atlas
The fishing
Of the large numbers excellent fishing beats on the Orkla River, the Ljøkjel beat, a two kilometres double bank stretch ten kilometres from the estuary, probably snatches the top prize – both in fishing terms as well as catches. Over the last years, the seasonal Ljøkjel catches represent around 8 – 10% of the total Orkla catches.

To make it even more attractive for consummate fly fishers, the owners have, from this season, allocated the upper 500 metres of this stretch as an exclusive fly fishing zone; maximum 4 rods (or 1, 2 or 3 rods if you prefer).
This exclusive top part of the beat starts with the Lie Pool and continues with the Finn, Øra and Ljøkjel pools – a continuous stretch of smaller pools and fast and slow moving water. As shown on the pictures, wading is no hassle – in fact, wading is not necessary – only ankle deep.

Orkla River is particularly well known for its BIG salmon and during the season a good few in the 18 – 23 kilos (40 – 50 lb) category are landed. And even if you don’t hook and land one of these salmon, just read what Gary Scott, one of Scotland team’s Spey casting World Champion said when he was fishing the Orkla River; – “it’s mesmerising, each time you put your fly out and it starts moving, your heart is throbbing – any take could be one of these ‘monsters’ – I love it. Its Norway for me. Any time!” Gary landed a 28-pounder.

The accommodation
To make the Ljøkjel fishing as affordable as possible we are offering self catering at a farm approx. ½ mile from the beat’s start. The accommodation is 2 adjoining log cabins suitable for 4 people sharing. One cabin for sleeping and one cabin for eating and resting. Based on demand, other accommodation and full board arrangement can be arranged.
