River Thurso Salmon Fishing Report January 12, 2017

The Salmon Atlas
The new season started on Wednesday 11th January, with Piper John MaCrae leading about twenty very hardy souls across the bridge from the Ulbster arms down to the Comlifoot pool. The weather was not good with frequent heavy rain/sleet/hail showers. In between the showers we toasted the river and then the first cast was made by Dr Mike Leach. Mike is a very regular visitor to the Thurso and has fished the river for some 35 years. On the previous night he had been the guest speaker at the opening dinner and gave us a passionate talk about his love for the River Thurso and also an insight on his approach to being a successful Thurso angler.

With the river running at 21 inches and rising quickly it was a difficult day, even to catch a few kelts, a few were caught and were in good order. The river continued to rise and peaked around 39 inches overnight.

The ghillies and myself are looking forward to meeting both the new and regular visitors to the Thurso in 2017, hopefully for another great season!
