Hi folks: still no sign of appreciable rain here in North Devon and the river really is quite low for the time of year, but the lower beats are still fishing well for salmon. It has been a good start to the salmon fishing season. I have heard of about 10 spring salmon being caught. Jim Crow caught a fresh 8lb springer yesterday just above the tidal water at Weare Giffard, so fresh fish must still be nudging upstream. Sea trout have been seen in the lower river as well. Last weekend I was doing some maintenance work by the river and there was a good trout rise, which always makes me feel the season has really started. We have had an excepionally dry winter and early spring: (I have recorded only 8 inches of rain in the first three months of the year). I suspect that at some stage during the season mother nature will get its own back. Keep fishing. Charles.
