Some snapshots
This lake is huge. I've stayed there twice and my father and sister more often.
I've raided the family album for some images.
First the
brazo sur ~ southern arm, is often blocked by the World's fastest glacier (a few miles west of point #11).
In what is a 4 yearly cycle the Perito Moreno completely blocks off that arm. Levels rise over 120' until the water punches through; causing devastating floods on the Santa Cruz river.
Looking up the glacier into Chile
Huge icebergs crumbling off - the resulting 'thunderclap' a couple of seconds later much louder than anything I'd previously heard.
The infant Santa Cruz river fighting a losing battle
One of the tributary streams. Rio Il Leone ~ much bigger, faster too, than the Tay. Unfished, turquoise glacial melt turbidity wasn't that bad. I'm told it has a late Apr/May steelhead run, big 20 pounders, which makes sense as it forms into the Rio Santa Cruz on leaving the lake.
