Upstream counts October 2012
The upstream count for October was 3,195, which has brought the total for the year to the end of the month to 21,146. The October upstream count is the lowest in our records. The five year and long term averages were 8,230 and 8,883 respectively. The total for the year to the end of October was the 12th highest and was markedly lower than the five year (31,055) and long term (27,597) averages. The highest October count (14,066) was recorded in 2003 and the highest count for January to October (44,761) was recorded in 2010. Up to 10am on the 5th, no upstream counts have been recorded for November.
The vast majority (>85%) of upstream counts were recorded during two distinct six day periods, 6th to 11th and 20th to 25th; the first period accounting for 32% of counts for the month and the second 56%. Although, river levels were similar during the two periods, there were marked differences in water temperatures; the second period was noticeably warmer than the first. The highest daily count was recorded on the 24th, when flows were close to lowest and temperatures were close to the highest recorded during month. Out with these two periods the very high flows appear to have inhibited upstream counts, so much so on four day no upstream counts were recorded.
The highest hourly counts were recorded between 8am to 5pm, while the fewest recorded were between 1am to 5am. Normally, during October counts are frequently recorded between 5am to 7pm, however, a good number are still recorded out with this period. This pattern of activity observed above is frequently observed during cooler periods of the year and or when river levels are quite high.

Angler Scale Sampling Programme 2012
During October, we have received 67 scale samples from salmon and 5 from sea trout. Of the salmon, 1.5% samples came from previous spawning fish, 1.5% were from early running multi sea winter (MSW) fish, 47.5% from one sea winter (1SW) fish and 49.5% from late running MSW fish. The chart below demonstrates how the proportions of the main age groups have changed during the fishing season. During the early part of the season, samples predominately came from early running MSW salmon. Through June July and August, later running MSW fish come dominate the samples and towards the end of the year the proportion of 1SW fish in the sample becomes increasingly strong.
So far, in 2012, we have received 409 scale samples from salmon, 99 from sea trout and the one unknown sample STILL remains unknown, if you are waiting for aging results from a sample you sent in back in July please get in touch. The samples we have received this season have come from 48 different fishing beats and from 165 different anglers.
If you are sending in some scales, please place them in a paper envelop (please do NOT wrap them in cling film, tin foil or put them in a plastic bag) including the place and date of capture and species. If you need some scale packets, we can send some out to you. We would also be grateful if you could give an estimate of weight and or length. If you wish to receive details of the scale reading, remember to add your name and address.
