Fish Counts

The upstream count for February was one and is the fourteenth highest upstream count in our records. The upstream count is lower than both the five-year (12) and long-term (11) averages. The highest recorded count for February was 41 which occurred in 2012. As of 11am 5th March, no upstream counts have been recorded.

The solitary upstream for February was recorded on the just before 11:00 on the third February. The chart above shows the daily average flows and water temperatures for February and their corresponding five year averages (2008 - 12 inclusive). For much of February the conditions have not been benign. When temperatures have increased (the highest daily average was just 4.0⁰C), flows have been high and unfavourable to fish movement but when the flows have become favourable the water temperatures have fallen or not increased enough.

Further details of the daily upstream counts for 2013 and historic monthly counts can be found by following the link below:

Angler Scale Sampling Programme 2013

So far, we have received scale samples from seven salmon for the February. Two of the samples were caught by one beat upstream of our facility at Riding Mill while the other five were from three beats downstream. Only one sample came from early running two sea winter or ‘spring’ fish, while the other six came from fish that will have returned to the river at sometime during 2012. Interestingly, one these salmon was a recapture of a fish originally caught during our broodstock collection operations. The salmon, a female was caught on the River Rede on 1st November 2012 and taken to the hatchery. On the 16th November, it was sampled, tagged (Green 1292) and returned the river once the eggs are drawn from the fish; this is done by gently massaging belly when the fish is ‘ripe’ or ready to release its eggs. It was recaptured on 19th February 2013, downstream of Riding Mill and was described as a well-mended kelt weighing roughly 10lbs. Scale reading indicated the fish to be a 2.2+. We only tag around 500 fish a year, so if you do happen to see a green or blue tag just beneath the dorsal fin of a fish you have caught, please note down the number and the colour of the tag and call us at the number below.

If you are waiting for to find out the aging results of a sample you sent, we hope to send these out to you towards the end of next week.
