The details:

As you may already know, Forth Rivers Trust is tackling invasive plant species along the river Devon, thanks to the Scottish Government’s Nature Restoration Fund, managed by NatureScot.

We are encouraging volunteer groups and individuals to help us tackle Himalayan Balsam, an invasive plant species that is easy to pull from the ground.

For that reason, we are organising a training session for everyone to join.

This will take place in Muckhart Community Woods, on 18th May, and the session will run from 10am – 12.30pm. It will involve training on how to ID the plant, best practise for pulling, and a pulling session.

Here is a map link to the start location, which is a vehicle parking spot by the Community woods (NO 0051 0059) https://maps.app.goo.gl/gkjJyJ1aWbbpbnFp6

Please note there is only space for 5 vehicles here, so if you can walk from Pool of Muckhart village, please do.

The epicentre for the Balsam is a short walk from the start location.

We will provide gloves, tea / coffee and biscuits and good cheer !

Please wear long sleeves, trousers and drinking water. Waterproofs, suncream and midge repellent are recommended.

We will give a health and safety briefing before every task – please email Charlotte or Mario for a copy of the risk assessment for the activity.

Dates thereafter:

Following this event, we will go out once a week working our way downstream on the following dates. Please join in if you can, and spread the word! Please let us know you are coming along, so we can let you know the start location for each day.

Why are we balsam pulling?

One of the most important things to consider when treating invasive plant species along rivers is that most of these plants will use the current as a spreading method, and therefore it is very important that the plants higher up in the catchment are treated first to avoid re-infection of treated sites.

For that matter, FRT has developed a map where you can see the areas that have been treated and marked the areas where you have pulled balsam this year – Balsam Bash App.

This map is still in development, and it may change in the near future, but you can already use it!

Whether you are wanting to join us in future Balsam pulling tasks, organise groups yourself or you’re simply interested in the treatment of invasive species, you should join us!
