The Salmon Atlas
The Orkla River, regarded as one of the best sport fishing salmon rivers in Europe, is a part of the large Trondheim fjord basin, also acknowledged as one of the major fjord systems for Atlantic salmon.

A bag net buy-out in the fjord and coastal areas has improved Orkla’s salmon runs markedly, and the numbers of salmon as well the average weight has increased since its introduction in 2004 (5.3kg/ 11.7 lbs in 2007).

The river is known for its big and beautifully shaped salmon which are caught throughout the season from 1 June till 31 August.

The total salmon runs are 88km (54.6 miles) through the valley of Orkdal, comprising the districts of Orkdal, Meldal and Rennebu. The area is steeped in historic events throughout centuries and one of the first ever electrified trains was used on the Thams railway, bringing iron ore to the Orkanger docks for shipping.

The river enters the southernmost part of the Trondheim Fjord by the town of Orkanger (30 minutes drive south of the city of Trondheim).
