(River Tay weekly report week ending 25th February 2023)
We moved into the last week full week of February and the weather was quite settled. There was some rain over the catchment area on Wednesday night as a cold front spread across the country. Following this temperatures dropped and it was much cooler towards the end of the week. There were some wintry showers over the higher ground. Water levels were reasonable for many beats on most days last week.
Mr Robert McFarlane lands a lovely springer from Loch Tay
Catches were slow on the river but the light fishing pressure did not help. However, there were still some fine Tay spring sparklers caught last week. It was a super Saturday for Mr Robert McFarlane on Loch Tay. Mr McFarlane was trolling the loch when he got a good take. A tremendous battle ensued after which Mr McFarlane went on to land a cracking fourteen pounder.
Mr Mike Collier had a fantastic Friday when he was fishing at Dunkeld. Mr Collier was fishing the lower half of the beat when he got a savage take. Following a good fight Mr Collier landed a fine springer weighing nine pounds. Well done Sir!

It was a great end to the week at Dunkeld when fifteen year old Charlie McKay caught a magnificent springer from the Gauge Pool on Saturday. The fish was in fabulous condition and the smile on young Charlie’s face says it all!

Mr Simon Littlejohn had a magical Monday at Meikleour. Mr Littlejohn was fishing the Junction Pool when he hooked a nice fish. After a good fight, Mr Littlejohn landed a lovely springer weighing fifteen pounds.

There was more success at Meikleour on Saturday. This time Mr Al McKendry landed a nice nine pounder from the Pumphouse.

Taymount has been one of the more productive beats this season so far and last week was no different when a cracking eighteen pounder was caught from the beat on Thursday. This just goes to show the quality of fish that run the Tay system at this time of year.
There were other fish caught last week from the Tay system on beats that do not wish to be mentioned in this report.
The weather is set to be settled next week as high pressure dominates so river levels should gradually drop. This should make the proverbial needle in the haystack easier to find and hopefully catches will improve.
Maybe a fly for next week?

SOME MARCH MAGIC IN THE DAYS AND WEEKS AHEAD?
(River Tay salmon fishing prospects week commencing 27th Feb 2023)
We move into March next week, which sees us say goodbye to winter and hello to the meteorological spring. In March often catches as well as weather conditions improve as we progress through the month. So, let us keep our fingers crossed that this is the case.
Over the next few weeks, fish destined for the River Tummel should start entering the system in greater numbers in addition to the fish heading for Loch Tay and beyond. This should mean there is a better chance of hooking that elusive spring salmon.
Over the weekend the weather has been mainly dry and this trend is set to continue in the days ahead. Looking ahead to next week high pressure will be in charge for most of the week bringing dry and settled weather. Winds will be light and there will be variable amounts of cloud. There is also a risk of night time frosts.
Next week there is a good chance of making contact with a fresh fish almost anywhere on the main river. Loch Tay and the River Tummel are also well worth considering at this time of year. The river offers tremendous value for money at this time of year with anglers being able to fish on some of the most famous and prestigious beats in Scotland at a very reasonable price. So why not wet a line on the mighty Tay next week? You might just experience some March Magic!
